Providing comprehensive mental health services to improve the well-being of adolescents. We are here to help.
The goal at Gateway Youth Services is to help youth to build the skills needed to transition to a less restrictive placement, back within the larger community. We recognize that there has been regression with many youths who suffered during COVID-19 and see the need for an increase in social-emotional skill development. Gateway Youth Services has observed a significant increase in negative behaviors in our residents and while we recognize that there are several factors that play into the behaviors (trauma, learning loss, school closings, inconsistent routines etc.), it doesn’t negate the impact that lost time in social gatherings/outings has had on their socialization, etc. during the COVID restrictions, and their timeline to discharge to less restrictive or back to family/foster placement.

To combat this, we believe that the presentation of a formal SEL (Social, Emotional Learning) Program for our residents, presenting explicit SEL instruction and skill building, would greatly enhance the residents’ opportunities to make up for lost time. Gateway Youth Services will break up the SEL Program over a 6 week span with a pre-assessment and a post assessment in order to have data on any gains that were made with the program.
The goal is to transition residents to less restrictive care at a higher rate and recover the skills that were lost during the COVID restrictions.
To enhance the transition process, Gateway Youth Services has shifted our practices to address these needs, increased clinical staff and added trained recreational staff to provide a more structured, therapeutic recreational outing plan.
At Gateway Youth Services, a therapeutic environment is provided at all times by qualified counselors and direct care staff. Youth will earn trust and privileges by complying with written rules and expectations according to age. Each resident will meet with a Psychiatrist for medication management, a therapist for individual and group therapy, and a case manager, to monitor the daily progress, and disciplinary issues of their individual treatment plan. The case manager will provide monthly updates and quarterly reviews to the placing agency and/or legal guardians.
